Hadoop - Super power!

We promised you there was more to follow and here it is. Our CEO, Dr. Phil Shelley shares his views on Hadoop for fellow business managers to take note of. Here is an excerpt on what he has to say:

“Hadoop is NOT a high-speed SQL database. It is in no ways simple, nor can it be easily connected to legacy systems. It is certainly not a replacement for your current data warehouse and it won’t save you millions in an eye blink. It won’t be built or operated by your DBAs, leave that, it won’t even make any sense to your data architects! Please don’t implement it if your organization does not have the necessary Linux skills.

What it is though, is a super-powerful environment to:

• Store vast amounts of data
• Run queries on huge data sets
• Ask questions previously impossible
• Archive data but still analyze it
• Capture data streams at incredible speeds
• Massively reduce data latency
• Transform your thinking about ETL

Think of Hadoop as an ecosystem and while you are at it, rethink everything about the way you capture, store, analyze or structure your data. Hadoop will significantly reduce your data storage costs while drastically improving the speed with which you analyze the data. The capability of your team will improve immensely with Hadoop.”
